Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Sherri Shepherd
and the women of ABC's The View on Tuesday criticized Pope
Benedict XVI's recent remarks on gay marriage.
Speaking on Monday to a gathering of
diplomats from nearly 180 countries accredited to the Vatican, the
pope warned that gay marriage threatens humanity.
He said that children need proper
“settings” and that “pride of place goes to the family, based
on the marriage of a man and a woman.”
“Ooh, somebody wasn't invited to
Elton John's wedding,” joked The View co-host Joy Behar.
“I think about my marriage and gay
marriage doesn't affect my marriage,” said Elisabeth Hasselbeck,
considered the most conservative co-host on the panel. “You know
what affects my marriage? Divorce.”
Sherri Shepherd called attention to the
Catholic Church's child abuse scandals in her comments: “You've got
a lot of people who are condemning things and they haven't cleaned
house themselves, and they're doing the same things that they're
condemning people for.” (The video is embedded in the right panel
