Hawaii State Rep. Bob McDermott has proposed allowing voters to decide whether gay and lesbian couples can marry in the state.

In 2013, Hawaii became one of the 36 states, plus the District of Columbia, where gay couples can marry when former Governor Neil Abercrombie signed a bill into law approved by lawmakers.

McDermott, a Republican, has sued in state court, arguing that the Legislature did not have the authority to legalize such unions. The case is currently before the Hawaii Supreme Court.

The Honolulu Civil Beat reported Friday that McDermott's measure proposes amending the Hawaii Constitution to “reserve marriage to opposite-sex couples.”

The outlet noted, “it seems unlikely that a majority of lawmakers would want to revisit the issue.”
