Democratic presidential candidate
Hillary Clinton has applauded passage of a referendum on same-sex
marriage in Ireland, now the first country to legalize such unions
through a popular vote.
“Well done, Ireland. -H,” Clinton
messaged on Twitter.

The tweet was favorited more than
11,000 times and retweeted by more than 6,500 followers as of Sunday
afternoon.
After she left her post as secretary of
state in 2013, Clinton recorded a 6-minute
video for the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) in which she endorsed
marriage equality for the first time.
She included an engaged
male gay couple in her announcement video. Shortly afterward,
she called on the Supreme
Court to strike down restrictive marriage bans nationwide.
