Iowa State Representatives Tom Shaw,
Glen Massie and Kim Pearson say they'll attempt to impeach four
Supreme Court justices who favored gay marriage, the Iowa
Independent reported.
The
action comes after voters on November 2 ousted three out of the seven
judges whose unanimous 2009 ruling brought gay marriage to the
Midwest. Democrats in control of both houses have refused to
back a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, frustrating
social conservatives opposed to the institution.
Opponents, led by former GOP
gubernatorial candidate Bob Vander Plaats, turned their attention to
ousting the three judges up for a retention vote.
Republicans also managed to wrest
control of the House and the governor's mansion away from Democrats.
The three GOP lawmakers say they will
draft articles of impeachment to try to remove the remaining four
judges because they've heard from voters angry about the gay marriage
ruling.
Impeachment would require the
assistance of the Senate, which remains in the hands of Democrats.
A spokesman for the American Civil
Liberties Union of Iowa, Ben Stone, called the GOP push for
impeachment “truly shocking.”
