An audio recording in which San Antonio Councilwoman Elisa Chan calls gays “disgusting” was released on Thursday.
The recording was made by James Stevens, an aide who quit this week.
The San Antonio Express-News acquired the recording, which was made on May 21 in Chan's City Hall Office.
In the recording, Chan and her staff are heard discussing a proposed gay-inclusive non-discrimination ordinance and how Chan can oppose the measure without appearing to “beat up anybody.”
“You know, to be quite honest, I know this is not politically correct,” Chan is heard saying. “I never bought in that you are born, that you are born gay. I can't imagine it.”
“This is my philosophy, guys. Whatever you want to do in your bedroom is none of my business, but do not impose your view on other people, especially becoming policy … because personally, I think it's just disgusting just to even think about. All the definitions.”
Later she adds that she doesn't “think homosexual people should do adoption. They should be banned by adoption.”
“How terrible. … They're [the adopted children] going to be confused. You see two men go into a bedroom. You see two women kissing. Is that not confusing? It's confusing.”
“It is actually, what you call, suggestive, for the kids to be corrupt, which is against nature. I'm telling you, anything that is against nature is not right.”
When asked about her comments, Chan said that she had not heard the recording.
“We talk [about] a lot of things in the staff meetings, so I wanted to know also under what context,” she said.
A spokesman for Chan refused to comment on the “alleged recording” when asked by The Huffington Post.
