After stating that he never personally advocated for gays to be stoned, Pastor James Manning says stoning unrepentant gays would be appropriate.
Manning, who helms the ATLAH World Missionary Church in Harlem, New York, has gained notoriety with the proclamations he makes on his church sign.
Last week, the sign read, “Jesus would stone homos. Stoning is still the law,” along with a reference to Leviticus 20:13, which reads, “If a man lies with a man as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.”
The message prompted a lesbian to stop by the church and ask to be stoned and a vandal to spray paint on the sign “God is gay.”
Manning responded to the incidents by denying he said he would “stone homos.”
“I never said that I would stone homos. I never said that,” Manning said. “I never said that I would ask anyone else to stone homos. I never said that. What I did say is what the Bible says. And I gave several verses within the word of God that demonstrates why I believe that Jesus would stone homos.”
In an interview with Vocativ, Manning reverses course, saying stoning, under certain circumstances, would be appropriate.
“I do think that anyone who promotes that as a lifestyle and tries to make it a national and international event and create warfare upon everybody else, then the appropriate response would be to stone them back to the Stone Age, or stone them back to hell,” Manning said.
The bespectacled pastor added that “white homos” prey on black men.
“The white homo who now lives in the [Harlem] community, and there are a lot of them that moved up here … they prey on black men, they convert black men,” he said. “Not only those who live here, but in the office buildings all over New York City and places around America where homosexuals have supervisory positions.”
