A resolution to be heard Tuesday by
Blount County, Tennessee leaders asks God not to destroy the county
in his “coming wrath” over legalized same-sex marriage.
The resolution, titled Resolution
Condemning Judicial Tyranny and Petitioning God's Mercy
and sponsored by County Commissioner Karen Miller, calls the
Supreme Court's summer ruling striking down gay marriage bans in all
50 states illegal and asks God for his forgiveness.
“[T]he United States Supreme Court is
not the sole and final arbiter of the powers of the States under the
Ninth and Tenth Amendments, when it acts in an area outside of its
jurisdiction,” the resolution states, adding that the county is
being “forced” to “comply with what is clearly against our
conscience, and violates what the Bill of Rights, both State and
Federal, give us the Right to do.”
The resolution also calls on state
leaders to protect “natural marriage” and “defend the Moral
Standards of Tennessee.”
“WE adopt this Resolution before God
that He pass us by in His Coming Wrath and not destroy our County as
He did Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighboring cities. As the
Passover Lamb was a means of salvation to the ancient Children of
Israel, so we stand upon the safety of the Lamb of God to save us.”
The Ring
of Fire website called the resolution a product of an “inflexible
mindset” that is being “fueled by the GOP and corporate media
sources such as Fox News.”
