Actor Jake Gyllenhaal has credited Brokeback Mountain with playing a part in the LGBT rights movement that sought equal marriage for gay and lesbian couples.
Gyllenhaal played gay opposite Heath Ledger in the film, which recently celebrated its tenth anniversary.
During a The Hollywood Reporter interview at Loyola Marymount University's School of Film & TV, the 34-year-old Gyllenhaal was asked when openly gay actors would be accepted in Hollywood.
“I wish I had that answer,” Gyllenhaal answered. “I think it is changing, first of all. And it's pretty amazing how it's changing.”
“And one of the things that I'm so proud of [about] that movie, was to see, within the past basically 10 years, how much has changed. You know, when the Supreme Court [issued a ruling] just a little while ago, I felt like we had been part, a little part and parcel of that movement. I was proud, you know? To me that's really a pretty incredible moment. We had to wait a little for it.”
“But when will it be okay for an actor to be gay? I mean, it's okay now,” he added.
