Abby Wambach says her proudest achievement is helping increase diversity on her team.
Wambach, who is openly lesbian, announced her retirement from professional soccer in October and played her last game last week in New Orleans.
A two-time Olympic gold medalist, FIFA Women's World Cup champion and six-time winner of the U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year award, Wambach has played for the U.S. women's national soccer team for 14 years.
In July, a kiss between Wambach and her wife Sarah Huffman after winning the FIFA Women's World Cup grabbed international headlines.
βI feel so lucky because when I was first on the team there was really no gay people on the team,β Wambach told gay glossy Out. βIn fact, there was almost the opposite, these girls were like, 'No, we're straight.' So, they had long hair and ponytails. And now you see this eclectic group of people that come from all different places and are different colors and have different preferences. For me, that's something I'm most proud of.β
