A Republican lawmaker in Georgia has proposed a bill that would protect opponent of marriage equality.
State Senator Greg Kirk's bill mirrors a proposed federal measure known as the First Amendment Defense Act (FADA).
Introduced June 17 by Senator Mike Lee of Utah and Rep. Raul Labrador of Idaho, FADA seeks to bar federal “discriminatory action” against those who oppose the unions of gay and lesbian couples based on a “religious belief or moral conviction.”
According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Kirk has yet to file his proposal with the clerk of the Senate but confirmed that it would closely mirror federal efforts.
Georgia Equality Executive Director Jeff Graham responded: “That sounds like it would be legislation specifically designed to target the LGBT community. That would be of great concern to me.”
Leading Republican presidential candidates have backed FADA, according to the conservative American Principles Project.
