Mattel on Wednesday unveiled an Abby
Wambach doll at the MAKERS 2016 Conference in California.
A two-time Olympic gold medalist, FIFA
Women's World Cup champion and six-time winner of the U.S. Soccer
Athlete of the Year award, Wambach played for the U.S. women's
national soccer team for 14 years before retiring last year.
A kiss between Wambach and her wife
Sarah Huffman after winning the 2014 FIFA Women's World Cup grabbed
international headlines.
Wambach attended Wednesday's event to
help share the news.
She told the crowd that she played with
Barbies growing up but didn't identify with her dolls.
“Playing with Barbies that may or may
not have looked like I felt growing up, I think that this is a really
impactful statement,” Wambach said. “If you're out there and
maybe your doll doesn't look like how you feel, here's another
option.”
