Actress Jennifer Lawrence presented Robert De Niro with GLAAD's Excellence in Media Award at Saturday's 27th annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York City.
“Robert De Niro is not gay, so I don't know why we're here,” Lawrence joked. “That aside, Bob has asked me to present him with GLAAD's Excellence in Media Award because, in his words, I am like a daughter to him.”
“As one of the greatest actors who's ever lived, I can learn a lot from him. But the most important thing that he's taught all of us is acceptance,” she added.
In accepting his award, De Niro, a two-time Oscar winner, joked back: “Thank you, Jen. If I were a lesbian, I'd be all over you. Being a father figure has its limitations.”
De Niro, an outspoken supporter of LGBT rights and co-founder of the gay-inclusive Tribeca Film Festival, talked about his father's late coming out in the HBO documentary Remembering the Artist: Robert De Niro, Sr. The film, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, documents the senior De Niro's life through his son's eyes.
GLAAD also honored Mariah Carey at Saturday's event.
