Kelsey Grammer plays gay nightclub owner Georges in the Broadway revival of “La Cage Aux Folles,” the Wall Street Journal reported.
Grammer is best known for his role as the fastidious Frasier Crane – a role he started on NBC's Cheers and carried over to Frasier.
The revival of the 1983 musical – the inspiration behind the hit film The Birdcage staring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane – revolves around the lives of Georges and his flamboyant partner Albin, the star attraction at their St. Tropez drag nightclub. Englishman Douglas Hodge plays the part of Albin.
The play opened Sunday to rave reviews.
Grammer, a Republican, told the paper that the play is just fun, no politics: “My take on homosexual, heterosexual, transgender relationships, interracial relationships, it's all up to you and the person you love, and frankly I've never thought that politics and marriage mixed in any way.”
“So I'm not a big proponent of big government being in charge of weddings,” he added.
The 55-year-old Grammer was last seen on Broadway a decade ago in Macbeth.
