Appearing Sunday on ABC's This Week,
Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal said that he supports an amendment to
the U.S. Constitution limiting marriage to heterosexual couples.
Jindal reiterated his opposition to
marriage equality, saying that his Christian faith “teaches” him
that marriage is a heterosexual union.
“I'm not for discrimination against
anybody,” he said. “I know that many politicians are so-called
evolving on this issue based on the polls. I don't change my views
based on the polls.”
“I am proud that in Louisiana we
define marriage as between a man and a woman. If the Supreme Court
were to throw out our constitutional amendment, I hope they wouldn't
do that, [but] if they were to do that, I certainly support [Texas
Senator] Ted Cruz and others that are talking about making a …
constitutional amendment to allow states to continue to define
marriage. I think it should be between a man and a woman,” he
added.
Cruz has on various occasions vowed to
introduce a companion measure in the Senate to Kansas Representative
Tim Huelskamp's effort in the House.
When asked about his presidential
ambitions, Jindal answered “it's something I'm seriously looking
at, praying and thinking about.”
