The DVD of the gay-themed jailhouse
romance film staring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor is
now shipping in the UK, giving American audiences locked out from
the movie an opportunity to import the film.
The U.S. release of I Love You
Phillip Morris has been postponed four times since February, most
recently in June when a California judge issued a preliminary
injunction preventing the July 30 release of the film in the United
States. EuropaCorp, the French movie studio that owns the film,
claims its U.S. distributor Consolidated Pictures Group has not paid
the agreed upon $3 million advance for the film.
The film's DVD release allows Americans
willing to import the film – or lucky enough to find it at their
local video rental store – an opportunity to finally watch the
much-delayed movie.
The film is based on the true story of
Steven Russell (played by Carrey, Liar Liar) and his
improbable transformation from small-town businessman, father and
former cop to gay white-collar criminal and ingenious jailbreaker.
While in prison, Russell falls in love with his cellmate Phillip
Morris (played by McGregor, Star Wars).
A brief 1-minute clip of the movie
released on the Internet in June shows the pair in a romantic
jailhouse embrace. McGregor says “Enough romance, let's fuck” as
he heads down on Carrey. The clip was available to view on various
websites, but EuropaCorp managed to quickly take it down.
