Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick on
Saturday officiated over the wedding ceremony of Massachusetts
Congressman Barney Frank and Jim Ready.
According to Reuters, Patrick amusingly
added that Frank and Ready had vowed to love each other through
Democratic and Republican administrations alike.
“Barney was beaming,” said Texas
Congressman Al Green, who attended the Newton, Massachusetts
ceremony. “It was no different than any other wedding I've
attended when you have two people who are in love with each other.”
Frank was the first congressman to
voluntarily come out of the closet in 1987. He now has the
distinction of being the first sitting congressman to enter into a
marriage with a member of the same sex.
Frank, 72, and Ready, 42, have been
involved since 2007.
The couple married at the Boston
Marriott Newton in suburban Boston.
Also attending the ceremony were
Minority House Leader Nancy Pelosi and Massachusetts Rep. Niki
Tsongas.
Frank also hopes to marry Ready twice.
The congressman told a crowd in Portland, Maine last month that they
are looking forward to a do-over next year in Ready's home state of
Maine, provided voters approve a gay marriage law in the fall.
