Meghan McCain, Margaret Hoover and Abby
Huntsman are among the Republicans featured in a new video campaign
for gay marriage.
According to a press release from the
Young Conservatives for the Freedom to Marry, the campaign targets
“right-of-center political thought leaders in the Washington, D.C.
area.”
“I believe in equal opportunity. I'm
a conservative because I believe in individual freedom and I believe
that [marriage equality] is totally consistent with being
conservative,” Hoover, a political commentator and author, says in
one of the 30-second spots.
“I think right now you're seeing so
many people, Republicans and Democrats, coming out for marriage
equality. And I think just in statistics alone, it's obvious that
the tide is turning,” says McCain, daughter of Arizona Senator John
McCain. (The video is embedded on this page. Visit
our video library for more videos.)
“I've been a lifelong Republican
because I believe the Republican Party has always stood for equal
rights for all Americans,” says Huntsman, daughter of former Utah
governor Jon Huntsman. “I think that it's a generational issue.
And I think that over time you're going to see more and more
Republicans support the freedom to marry. And I'm happy and I'm
proud to be part of that movement.”
