Puerto Rican boxer Orlando “The
Phenomenon” Cruz, boxing's first openly gay fighter, on Saturday
married Jose Manuel Colon in New York City
The pair reportedly exchanged vows in
Central Park.
“[G]iving thanks to my heavenly
father for another day in my life and in the life of my now husband
Jose Manuel,” Cruz wrote in a
Facebook post.
According to gay week the Washington
Post, New York City Councilmember Melissa Mark-Viverito
officiated the ceremony. Mark-Viverito is among the frontrunners to
succeed Christine Quinn in her position as council speaker.
Puerto Rican gay activist Pedro
Julio Serrano served as the wedding's best man.
Cruz, who came out gay last year,
proposed to Manuel in a video posted on Facebook in August.
“I want to tell you and share with
your friends, and my friends, will you marry me?” Cruz asked in the
2-minute video. “It's an important step, a step which I've thought
about, which we have thought about.”
