Celebrity chef Guy Fieri, host of
Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, on Saturday officiated over a
group of weddings for gay couples during the annual South Beach Wine
& Food Festival.
The event, titled 101 Gay Weddings, was
hosted by out Chicago chef Art Smith and took place at Miami Beach's
James Royal Palm Hotel.
Smith told the AP that he decided on
101 couples after the movie 101 Dalmatians to highlight
Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi's ardent opposition to marriage
equality.
“We have our own Curella De Vil, Pam
Bondi,” Smith said. “She was determined that she was going to
prevent equality from coming to Florida.”
Florida became the 36th
state where gay couples can marry in January.
“For a state known for sunshine, it
was living in the darkness when it came to LGBT rights and it was
important to acknowledge that,” Smith said.
After
the ceremony, the couples were treated to a gourmet meal finished off
by a seven-tier gold and silver cake from Duff Goldman, star of Food
Network's Ace of Cakes.
