Actor James Franco, whose gay roles
have led to questions about his own sexuality, says he's “gay in
his art and straight in [his] life.”
The 36-year-old Franco has played gay
in numerous films, including 2008's Milk and this year's I
Am Michael, and produced several films which feature gay
characters.
In a feature posted online Tuesday,
Franco writes about the questions surrounding his sexuality.
“[A]re you fucking gay or what?”
straight James Franco asks gay James Franco in the piece titled The
straight James Franco talks to the gay James Franco.
“Well, I like to think that I’m gay
in my art and straight in my life,” gay James Franco answers.
“Although, I’m also gay in my life up to the point of
intercourse, and then you could say I’m straight. So I guess it
depends on how you define gay. If it means whom you have sex with, I
guess I’m straight. In the twenties and thirties, they used to
define homosexuality by how you acted and not by whom you slept with.
Sailors would fuck guys all the time, but as long as they behaved in
masculine ways, they weren’t considered gay.”
“Do you want people to think you're
gay?”
“Why would you say that it was a good
thing that people would consider me straight? I actually like it
when people think I'm gay; it's a great shield.”
Gay James Franco goes on to say he
enjoys his “queer public persona.”
