Police are investigating a college
shooting in Goldsboro, North Carolina as a possible hate crime.
Twenty-year-old Kenneth Morgan Stancil
III was arrested Tuesday while sleeping on a Florida beach. He is
accused of shooting 44-year-old Ron Lance, Wayne Community College's
print shop director, who is gay.
Stancil was booted from a work-study
program at the college in March for too many absences.
Police say Stancil entered the print
shop on Monday, fired a pistol-grip shotgun once, and fled the scene
on a motorcycle, which he abandoned in North Carolina. Police do not
know how Stancil got to Florida.
Stancil had a knife on him when
approached by police but was arrested without incident. During his
first court appearance in Florida, Stancil accused Lane of abusing a
relative.
“I just want you to know, I ridded
one less [expletive] child molester from the [expletive] Earth,”
Stancil said. “Doing time is the easy part, know what I'm saying.”
Reports on Lane's murder did not offer
any evidence to substantiate Stancil's claim. An
AP report quotes Stancil's mother denying the charge.
Goldsboro police Sgt. Jeremy Sutton
said that police are investigating a possible connection to white
supremacy.
