During a speech in July, Mat Staver,
chairman of the Christian conservative Liberty Counsel, railed
against the Supreme Court's ruling striking down gay marriage bans in
all 50 states, saying it would lead America “into the very pit of
Hell.”
Staver, who is representing Kentucky
county clerk Kim Davis in her legal fight not to issue marriage
licenses to gay couples, told a Reclaiming America for Christ
audience that neither the Supreme Court nor any state could legalize
such unions because they contradict the will of God.
“We need to stop playing charades,”
Staver
said. “Thinking that five individuals can re-write God's
natural, created order of marriage as a union of a man and woman, and
320 million Americans are simply just going to follow them like the
Pied Piper off the cliff into the very pit of Hell.”
“[A]s for me … I will not obey
those five!”
“I will obey God rather than man.
And they have shaken their fist in the face of the Creator, and we
must resist that.”
Staver called the ruling “a grave
sin” and warned of judgment for the majority justices in the case
“unless they repent.”
