Out candidate Matt Heinz on Tuesday won
the Democratic primary in Arizona's 2nd Congressional
District.
Heinz will face incumbent Republican
Martha McSally in the general election.
“Martha McSally has voted multiple
times against funding Planned Parenthood, or has voted multiple times
against equal pay for women or voted against protecting LGBT people
in the workplace,” Heinz
told supporters in his victory speech. “Those are not the
values that are consistent with Southern Arizona.”
Heinz, a doctor and a former state
legislator, was appointed by President Barack Obama to help with the
roll-out of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). His duties included
reaching out to LGBT organizations around the country. He left the
post last year.
The Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund,
which backs openly LGBT candidates, has endorsed Heinz's campaign.
