Singer Rufus Wainwright announced
Friday the birth of his daughter Viva Katherine Wainwright Cohen.
“Darling daughter Viva Katherine
Wainwright Cohen was born on February 2, 2011 in Los Angeles,
California to proud parents Lorca Cohen, Rufus Wainwright and Deputy
Dad Jorn Weisbrodt,” Wainwright wrote on his official website.
“The little angel is evidently healthy, presumably happy and
certainly very, very beautiful.”
The 37-year-old singer came out gay as
a teenager. Wainwright and partner Weisbrodt have been together five
years.
Lorca Cohen, a photographer and
videographer, is the daughter of Canadian singer-songwriter and
novelist Leonard Norman Cohen.
In announcing the birth, Wainwright
wrote that he would “like to offer everyone a digital cigar and
welcome the little lady in with a French phrase from his favorite
folk song, A La Claire Fontaine: “II y a longemps que je
t'aime, jamais je ne t'oublierai.”
Which roughly translates to, “I've
loved you for a long time, I will never forget you.”
Wainwright is the latest openly gay
celebrity to become a parent. Others include singers Ricky Martin
and Elton
John, and actors Neil
Patrick Harris and Cynthia
Nixon.
