Singer Sir Elton John and UK rugby star
Gareth Thomas attended Friday's royal wedding of Prince William and
Kate Middleton, who are now the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
Sir Elton and his partner, filmmaker
David Furnish, and Thomas were among the 1,900 guests of the Queen
who attended the Westminster Abbey ceremony.
“Need to buy a new hat? Thomas
tweeted to his nearly 18,000 followers in February. “Oops did I
say that out loud. Yes I have had an invite to the royal wedding.
Have you?”
The 36-year-old, 6-foot-3 Thomas came
out gay in 2009. In a recent appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres
Show, he
told his host that he once “prayed to be straight.”
The sixty-four-year-old Sir Elton has
close ties to the royal family. He was a close friend of Prince
William's late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, and performed a
special version of Candle in the Wind at Diana's 1997 funeral.
In a news agency photo, Sir Elton, who
recently became a father, is seen tearing up during Friday's
ceremony.
