The Chilean soap opera Infiltradas
(The Infiltrators) ends Thursday night with the wedding of
Ignacia Allamand and Marcela del Valle.
The wedding of Nina (played by
Allamand) and Macarena (Del Valle) is the first same-sex wedding
broadcast on network television in Chile.
In the nighttime soap aired on
Chilevision (CHV), the former actress Atenea Magallanes (played by
Katty Kowaleczko) steals the identity of her evil twin sister Minerva
to lead a squad of beautiful and courageous female detectives.
Together they infiltrate the Santo Domingo crime family that snatched
Atenea's daughter 20 years ago. (A trailer for the soap is embedded
in the right panel of this page.)
Gay marriage is not legal in Chile.
However, nearby Argentina legalized the institution last year.
The lesbian wedding arrives as gay
rights activists in Chile ramp up a campaign seeking government
recognition of gay and lesbian couples. While a gay marriage bill
introduced last year by Senator Fulvio Rossi appears to be dead,
activists
are organizing a national march to send a message to President
Sebastian Pinera, who has yet to deliver on promised civil unions
legislation.
