Rutina Wesley, who plays Tara Thornton
on HBO's vampire drama True Blood, says Tara's lesbian
relationship 'just happened.'
Tara spent much of last year mourning
the death of former boyfriend Eggs (played by Mehcad Brooks) and then
entered a violent affair with vampire Franklin Mott (James Frain).
But on the premiere of the show's
fourth season, Tara is involved with Naomi (Vedette Lim), a
cage-fighter from New Orleans.
In an interview with TVLine's
Michael Ausiello at Comic-Con in San Diego, Wesley scoffed at
Ausiello's suggestion that her character might be “just going
through a phase.”
“Let me tell you what I think,” she
responded. “My backstory is … I think it's just one of those
things that just sort of happened. I think she maybe met her, didn't
realize she was being hit on, next thing you know things happen and
she was sort of like, 'Interesting. Kinda liked that.' And I think
with the whole, you know, cage-fighting thing I think she just wanted
to start spending more time with her and then that sort of led to a
relationship.”
“I really do think there's a love
there,” she said.
“I would say she's bisexual,”
Wesley added. “And I don't think it's a phase because I think she
really is into this woman.”
