A CNN Presents report airing
Sunday shows Deryl Dedmon, the teen accused of killing James Craig
Anderson, also expressed a hatred for gay people.
CNN takes a look at the case in the
special titled Mississippi Still Burning? airing at 8PM and
11PM on Sunday.
Dedmon, now 19, is facing capital
murder and hate crime charges. He is accused of killing Anderson, a
49-year-old black man, who was beaten and run over by a truck in
Jackson, Mississippi on June 26.
According to CNN, Dedmon and a group of
seven white teens in two vehicles set off from Brandon in search of a
black man to “mess with.” The incident was recorded by a
surveillance camera mounted at the corner of a motel. (The video is
embedded in the right panel of this page.)
In the special, parents and students
who knew Dedmon discuss his hatred not only for blacks, but also
white people who had black friends and anyone he thought was gay.
The teen is also described as a bully.
Jordan Richardson, 17, one of Dedmon's
victims said: “When we would get into our altercations … there
was never any show of emotion or anything – anything. Deryl
always, I think, just carried around this backpack of hatred.”
